What is NPS Calculator? Retirement Guide 2026

NPS (National Pension System) is India's No.1 retirement scheme regulated by PFRDA and backed by Government. Our RetireWise NPS Calculator helps you calculate exact retirement corpus, monthly pension after 60, and tax-free lump sum. Unlike other calculators that need login or limit checks, RetireWise is 100% free, unlimited, no watermark, worldwide usable.

NPS is mandatory for government employees and voluntary for private employees, freelancers, NRIs. You can invest from age 18 to 70, retire at 60 (can extend to 75). Minimum Rs 500 per contribution, Rs 1000 per year. You get extra Rs 50,000 tax deduction under 80CCD(1B) over and above 1.5L of 80C, so total 2L tax saving.

How NPS Calculator Works? Formula

NPS uses monthly compounding: Future Value = Monthly SIP * [((1+r/12)^(n*12)-1)/(r/12)] * (1+r/12) where r is expected return, n is years. For example, Age 28 to 60 = 32 years, Monthly Rs 10,000 at 10% return: Corpus = 10000*[((1+0.10/12)^(384)-1)/(0.10/12)]*(1+0.10/12) = Rs 2.32 Crore. Total invested 38.4L, gains 1.93Cr. This is power of 32 years compounding.

After 60, as per NPS rule, you must buy annuity with minimum 40% corpus, remaining 60% you get as tax-free lump sum. If you choose 40% annuity, lump sum is 60% = 1.39Cr and pension = Corpus*40%*annuity rate/12. Annuity rate is ~6% currently given by LIC, SBI Life. So pension = 2.32Cr*40%*6%/12 = Rs 46,457/month for lifetime. If you choose 60% annuity, pension becomes Rs 69,686/month and lump sum Rs 92L. Our calculator lets you toggle annuity %.

NPS vs PPF vs EPF vs Mutual Fund - Which is Best for Retirement?

NPS: 10% return, 60% tax-free + 40% pension, lock till 60, Rs 2L tax benefit. PPF: 7.1% tax-free, lock 15 years, 1.5L tax. EPF: 8.25% tax-free, for salaried only. Mutual Fund: 12% but fully taxable, no lock. Best strategy: EPF (mandatory) + NPS (Rs 50k extra tax) + Mutual Fund SIP for high growth. At retirement, NPS gives monthly pension which PPF and MF don't give automatically. That's why NPS is called pension scheme.

Tips to maximize NPS: Start at 25 not 35 - 10 years extra = 3x more corpus, choose 75% equity till 40, increase contribution 10% yearly (step-up), buy annuity from best provider at 60 for higher pension rate, use 60% annuity for higher monthly pension if you have other lump sum from PPF.
